About Fort Osage

Step back in time and experience the lives of the men and women who secured the American Frontier at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark. Built in 1808, under the direction of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Fort Osage served dual roles as both a military garrison and a trade center.

Today, authentically attired historical interpreters take visitors on a journey through Fort Osage's past. Visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the reconstructed historic site overlooking the Missouri River as they learn about the daily life of military, civilian, and Native American populations at Fort Osage and explore museum exhibits at the Fort Osage Education Center.

The Fort Osage Education Center houses 4,000 square feet of exhibition space, sharing the history, people, cultures, and environment connected with the historic site and region. The Education Center Gift Store has an extensive collection of merchandise, including books, jewelry, souvenirs, paper goods, historic reproductions, toys, and unique gifts for guests of all ages.

Field Trips

Take your students on a frontier adventure! Volunteers and Historical Interpreters provide a visual education about the lives of soldiers and tradespeople who lived and worked on the Missouri Frontier in the early 1800s.

All field trip reservations will require admission fees for a minimum of 40 people. One adult is given a free chaperone admission for every 10 students. Admission for additional adults is $8.00 per person.

Field trips are scheduled on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays each week from April 1st through November 15th.

Driving Directions

Fort Osage National Historic Landmark is located 14 miles northeast of Independence, MO, at 105 Osage, Sibley, MO on the bluffs of the Missouri River.  

Driving Directions From KC:
Take 24 Highway east to Buckner, Missouri. Turn north at Sibley Street (BB Highway) and travel 2-3 miles, while watching carefully for directional signs. Drive through Sibley following the signs to Fort Osage.
